The Importance Of Good Parenting Skills To A Kid
Finding out that you're having a baby is great news, and you were probably beside yourself in excitement. Maybe you spent hours dreaming about how your baby would look or what kinds of things you would do together. Then your baby was born and reality struck; you realized that you have a defiant child on your hands.
Many parents find it difficult to admit to themselves that a defiant child isn't always the ray of sunshine they were hoping for. They may have dreamed about a well-behaved and respectful child, but unfortunately they seem to be out of luck in those departments.
Parents of defiant children should first and foremost accept that their children do not always exhibit ideal behavior. This step is necessary before they can really begin to correct the child's negative behavior.
If your child exhibits defiant behavior, you'll need to realize that while your child isn't perfect, neither are you as a parent. Learn how to be right kind of parent for your child instead of trying to be a parent for a very well-behaved child.
Instead of simply telling your child to behave more appropriately, give him or her the tools to understand the negative impact of the behavior. Enforce a more rigid structure in your home and avoid fighting for control of the house. Pass on problem-solving skills and accountability to your child.
It's been said many times that children would stop misbehaving if only they had better self-esteem. However, throughout my years of experience as a parent, coach, and teacher, I've found that the opposite is true.
All children, but misbehaving children especially, improve their self-esteem by acting appropriately and being rewarded for their success. Teach your child to solve problems and think about the consequences of his or her actions and you'll be setting them on the right path.
With your child learning these fundamental lessons, he or she will act out less and you will enjoy a more respectful relationship.
