Failure: It's Success In Waiting

At some time, everyone experiences failure. Whether it is related to relationships, hobbies, school, work, or any number of other possibilities, failure can happen to anyone. The problem may be due to difficulties with learning, family, marriage, employment, or other situations. In order to have success in life, it is important that individuals learn first how to deal with failure.

Some emotional reactions to failure may be anger, disappointment, despair, and hopelessness. People often personify failure. Instead of focusing on the event, they see themselves as being failures. There is, of course, a great difference between the two.

Most people would not consider Thomas Edison a failure, but before he finally invented the light bulb that worked, he missed the mark about 9999 times. If he had not persisted, and succeeded on that 10,000th try, this article might be scribed by pen in the dark.

A personal reaction to failure will determine the probability of achieving goals. Some people project blame outside themselves. Others repeat their mistakes, believing that something will change. The third type observe failure and use it as feedback for assessment and revision.

Failure, when viewed as feedback, is a valuable source of information regarding the planning stage, the action stage, and the evaluation stage of an event or project. With a lack of success in any part, revisions can be introduced to possibly change the results in a positive direction.

When the revision is completed, the appropriate action may begin. Monitoring of the progress may show positive outcomes. If not, then the process can be repeated until satisfaction is achieved.

As an example of turning a failure around, the Jacuzzi bothers invented the whirlpool bath for people suffering from arthritic conditions. The feedback they received, besides the low sales, was that the general public could not afford such a product. After re-evaluation, they successfully marketed their product to rich consumers as a luxury item. The Jacuzzi is now a familiar household name.

So one of the differences between people who fail and people who succeed is the ability to avoid personification of failure, and to perceive it as an opportunity to reassess, learn, and plan for achievement. Learning how to deal with failure is a must for anyone who wants to accomplish goals and dreams.
