What Makes A Great Coach?

If you have ever stood up at a football match and shouted over to the referee or manager of your team that you think you could do better there is little doubt you will you be the last to do so. It can be easy to look at what someone is doing and assume you could do better job. Coaches throughout all areas of the profession can encounter this, sports, business, and life coaches but when it comes to it, how many people would really do it? How many people understand what is involved? Below discussed are some of the skills and qualities needed to be a great coach and to show how valuable a good coach can be.

One of the best qualities for a coach to have is the ability to listen to a client. Being able to listen to what it is a client wants and why they feel coaching will help them is the foundation on which a coaching program can be built. This can be harder than it seems, especially if the client is shy or not confident at speaking, but it is essential to work out objectives as soon as possible.

Another quality that doesn't immediately spring to mind that coaches often have is the ability to think in the long term and they will tend not to become too easily distracted if things aren't going entirely to plan. Many will adapt their strategy with their clients and get them back on track without losing sight of their long term goals. This can be difficult to do on your own and where the value of a coach with an objective view on the situation can be extremely valuable.

A quality that can't really be taught but is one that is extremely useful for a coach is self-motivation and of course, the ability to motivate others. Motivation can be infectious and is a big part of coaching, it can be what pushes a client through a tough time or be behind them aiming that little bit higher. Motivation is one of the great ingredients for success and something which is shared amongst coaches no matter which area, be it business or life coaching.

A quality most great coaches have is the ability to plan and create a path to success based on the needs of a client. Many will work from blueprints and re-use similar plans, but those who have real success are those who work with their client to ensure the path they are taking is relevant and in line with what they want to achieve. This is a skill that can develop with experience over time and become a key part of understanding your client.

There are many skills and qualities needed to be a coach, due in no small part to the variety of clients they face. Those mentioned in this article are a good place to start and if you think you have what it takes you won't know until you try it! Helping people and businesses achieve can be very rewarding and if this appeals to you, try coaching and you may find yourself a new career.

Business coaching is becoming more and more popular and organisations all over the globe are using it to invigorate empoloyees and to bring teams closer together.
