How You Can Use Hypnotic Technique to Make an Outstanding First Impression

by Steve Roehm

James enters the giant room. Behind the large oak desk sits the Personnel Manager. James looks over the Manager's shoulder and out the panes of freshly cleaned windows to a view that takes his breath way.

"So, Mr. Calloway, why do you think you would be a benefit to Cybercorp?"

As the corners of his mouth curve upward, James Calloway knows he is ready. A smile stretching across his face, he begins his interview…

Obviously it is important to make a good first impression when meeting someone and creating any kind of relationship with them. Whether you agree or disagree, people will judge you - in a positive or negative way - based solely on those first moments of meeting you. As a matter of fact, some may even decide whether or not to continue a dialogue with you based solely on those first few moments of that first hello.

Here are a few quick and easy strategies you can implement to ensure the best chances of success.

Line of Sight

People are most often more at ease looking into each others eyes. Have you ever had a conversation with a person who wouldn't look into your eyes? Did it make you feel anxious? People do want to see whom they are talking with.

Also, studies have proven that for most people, a direct line from the right eye more than the left is favored. Now, when you want to get the most out of communication with people, make sure you look "right in the eye"…literally.

Be a Reflection

Have you heard of the cliche that people like those who are like themselves (Birds of a feather?) Actually it's true. We are most at east with people who talk, act and share the same values as ourselves.

In hypnosis we use a technique called mirroring. It simply means that you try to match a persons behavior. If they are leaning forward, you lean forward. If they are breathing shallow, you breathe shallow. If they are speaking fast, you match their pace. And so forth.

There are numerous books available on mirroring; this article just scratches the surface. But keep in mind though that the more you like the person you talk to the more likely you will make a connection with them.

God Gave You Two Ears but Only One Mouth

Some say that this means we should listen twice as much as we talk. This is often true (though not always, as was the case in our example job interview earlier.)

Now the key here is don't just listen but "actively" listen. That means really pay attention to what another person is saying and responding appropriately. It is very easy to fall into the trap of not really paying attention to what the other person is saying and instead thinking about what you will say next.

Also, don't interpret. Often we filter a person's words using our own experiences, and we don't really understand what is being said. This can lead to misunderstandings or even worse. Really try to listen to what a person is saying, repeating it back for clarification if you need to.

Conclusion

Three simple, yet extremely effective techniques you can use to create a great first impression.

Look the person in the (right) eye, match their tone and behavior, and " most importantly " shut up and actively listen to what they have to say. If you can master these three simple strategies, you will be considered a great conversationalist with everyone you meet. And maybe even land that dream job like our friend James, too.
