Good advice for small business owners

sage software

Bookkeeping used to completely perplex me and as a result I had to find a simpler way which I want to share with you. Everyone who creates or manages a business has ’higher priority’ things to do with their time than spend time on their accounting. Bookkeeping is a ‘chore’ that many people enjoy doing but should be attended to on a consistent basis to avoid disaster.

When I initially started my business my accountant advised or should I say insisted that I used a small business accounting software package made by an outfit called Sage Software. I instantly went out and purchased the software without even considering if it would suit my needs. This was definitely one of the biggest mistakes I made as the software turned out to be really difficult to understand and use. To be straight with you whenever I see the word accounting attached to the word software I am always reminded of the first wisdom I want to share with you and that is just about all small business accounting software assumes the user possesses good working knowledge of accounting.

Just like me small business people understand their craft and the product or service they sell and not accounting but in my case I was driven to devote time to finding a system that would work for me. The second piece of advice I want to share with you is my discovery of a really useful and free web application called salesorder.com.

This is definitively the simplest system I have ever used and what’s more it is web based and therefore I can access it from anywhere I choose to work. And here is the best bit I want to share with you, the people at salesorder.com know their subject, just like their service they are a joy to work with and better still are happy to spend substantial time with their users (even the free ones) helping folks like me to understand and address real issues in my company and to top it off they have taught me the accounting I need to know.

An interesting article, but would like to pick up on point made:

' Everyone who creates or manages a business has ’higher priority’ things to do with their time than spend time on their accounting'

This to me says it all - focus on what you do best and have someone else do the work you consider to be a 'chore'.

When you are dealing with the 'chores' you should be doing what you are best at and that is generating income.

There are companies out there to help - papermountainsolutions.co.uk being one of them.
