How Choosing The Right Mentor Benefits You

A mentor is one of the many resources you can get to help you in the achievement of your goals. Out of all the tools you have available to you, finding a mentor is one that can motivate you to be your best. Here are some other reasons mentors are good business associates.

Good mentors have extensive experience in their field which you can tap into and learn the things they don't teach you in university. The principles that are taught in school don't always work as expected when applied to real world problems. Mentors will show you the ins and out of your trade so you can avoid the same pitfalls they fell in during their time in the industry.

Mentors usually have an extensive network of associates that they have developed over the years. Most will be happy to allow you to tap into that network which will provide you with additional resources to help you in your business. Business deals, educational opportunities and promotions are just some of the opportunities that can be opened to you through your mentor.

Mentors are great people to seek out when you need advice about your business or how to overcome a tough challenge. Since they've been where you are, they are able to look at your situation and give you the tools you need to move forward with your ideas about your business. Most are also good listeners if you need to get things off your chest.

Choosing the right mentor is a challenge worth undertaking. To start your search, begin by looking at your current network of business friends, partners and associates. If no one in your network seems like a good fit, then ask for recommendations from them for someone who might be. Another good place to look is professional and government organisations such as SCORE.

Carefully consider everyone who makes you list of potentials. You want someone with extensive experience in their field. You also want someone whose personality works well with yours. Someone whose leadership style rubs you the wrong way will only make you want to avoid that person whereas someone who has the same personality as you won't challenge you enough to make you grow. Look for someone whose strength and weaknesses balance out yours.

Having a mentor who shows you the ropes and leads you to success is the best thing you can do for yourself and your business.
