How would I know whether counselling would benefit me more than life coaching or vice versa?

Can you answer IP_Outcast's question about Coaching?:

I guess I know more about counselling than I do about life coaching, so what's it all about and what are the benefits? And how would I know if it's for me?

I suffer occasionally from depression, issues with self confidence, lack of direction etc etc. Should I therefore see a counsellor to help me sort my head out or a life coach to help me sort my life out? Any advice would be appreciated!

i think you can only find out if its right for you if you give it a try. maybe after a couple of sessions you may think you'd want to carry on and that its helping you or that it is no good at all. I had been offered counselling for bereavement, but rejected it, and therefore could have been a big mistake. so i say just try it out, and if that doesnt work, you can always look for more things to help with your problems. hope this helped!

You sound like a friend of mine so I'll give you the same advice I gave him.

Grow some balls and start beleiving in yourself, that's all some poncy counsellor is going to get you to do and doing it yourself with give you a sense of acheivement.

With any therapist, psychologist, or the new life coaching, you need to understand that their primary purpose is NOT to tell you how to live your life, but to make sure that you are aware of the possibilities. The ultimate decisions and responsibilities for your life are up to you.

It is good to seek advice sometimes. The trick is knowing what advice to incorporate into your own philosophy and what to discard. Remember, because someone has gone to school, received a degree or a license is NOT a guarantee that they are always correct or even know what's best for you.

If you are rich and pretentious… Try a life coach.

If you are a real average person of average wealth… Go with a counselor.

Life coach is a parvenu way of saying counselor…

Hi IP Outcast,

What would be best for you at first is actually neither option. Start with your primary care physician. That's because there are so very many different reasons why the things you describe can be happening to you, and he or she is able to ask a few informed questions, and then point you in the right direction. If you'd like to discuss further, you can contact me via Answers. Best wishes!

A friend of mine had a life coach for a while. It's not a rich and pretencious version of a counsellor. They help you to see you life from another perspective so you learn how you can change it. It seems more personal that a counsellor. A counsellor can listen and advise you. A life coach will help you.

Only way is to give it a go, be careful can work out very expensive, if you do not have a connection with the person, cut it short, or you will end up with a hefty bill.
