Strategic Planning And Management - Balanced Scorecard

When you hear about balanced scorecards, what are the things that first come to mind? Perhaps you are thinking of a certain sport or ball game like basketball or football. In the business world, a balanced scorecard often refers to a kind of strategic planning and management system that aims to align different business activities to the vision, mission, and strategy of the organization. In this way, different areas of the business and its operations can be improved, including but not limited to internal and external communications, as well as organizational or business performance. This strategic planning and management concept is anchored on including strategic non-financial performance metrics as means of measuring success from a "balanced" viewpoint.

The balanced scorecard concept has been around as early as in the 1990s and through the years, it has evolved and is now being viewed more than just as a means to measure performance framework. In fact, it has since then been developed into a full strategic planning and management system. These days, this concept also involves the transformation of the strategic plan of the organization from being a passive document into attractive marching orders that the different members of the organization will follow on a daily basis.

This approach also aims to give organizations a clearer view of what needs to be monitored and measured so that the actions taken by the different members of the organization are in the same line with its financial objectives. Through this, executives and managers are able to understand that success is not only seen from a financial viewpoint but also from a non-financial perspective.

In fact, the whole concept of having a balanced scorecard has evolved that these days, it is no longer just a means to measure performance and success - it has turned into a totally new management system that can help organizations in developing clearer visions and strategies so these can be translated into clear actions. Simply put, it is no longer just a measure of performance but it is also a means of deriving feedback. When fully and effectively deployed or implemented, it can turn strategic planning and management from being an academic exercise into the very core or center of the efforts exerted by the organization.

Learning more about the whole concept of having a balanced scorecard can bring in a lot of benefits into an organization. And what better time to start than now?

Pay Your Taxes To Avoid A Tax Lien

Have you ever wondered what a tax lien is? Have you even heard of it before? Most people understand that if they don't pay their mortgage that their home will be taken away and the same goes for their car payments. Despite this, most people have never even heard of a lien, let alone a tax lien. Especially in times of such economic uncertainty it is important to understand what a tax lien is.

When you fail to make your tax payments on time the IRS starts to send you notices. If you fail to respond to these notices and work things out with them, or in other words starts making some progress on your back due taxes, they can put a tax lien on your home. This tax lien prevents you from being able to offer the property as collateral for financing or from transferring the lien on the property to another individual. The tax lien will then remain in place until the debt has been completely paid off.

In the case of unpaid property taxes the government will send notices to the lenders that have financed that property. They do this because lenders are quick to pay off the taxes for the owners. This is because having a lien on the home puts them at a high risk for losing that property and not being able to recoup any of the money.

Once the financers have paid off the tax lien debts the owner then must pay them back. The company sets up an escrow account and charges them monthly until their debt is paid. On top of that they charge a monthly fee for the future property tax payment, so that each year the correct amount (or close to it) is saved up. If property taxes increase or decrease an adjustment will be made to the next years taxes to make up for it or a refund will be issued. This is something that can be worked out and that the owner can have a bit more of a say in though.

A tax lien is not limited to the failure to pay property taxes. When income taxes aren't paid the government also has the right to seize your property. In order to avoid this problem a simple visit with an accountant can help you learn how to manage your money and figure out how much money should be taken out of each paycheck to avoid needing to make a lump sum payment each April.

If you don't even want to bother just let the government seize the property for good and sell it via a tax deed auction or tax lien certificate. However, if you just take the time to learn a few things about finances and prepare for your annual payments avoiding a tax lien is easy as pie.

So Your Partner Needs More Space?

Relationships require work, a lot of work if they are to survive. However, we are all different and some of us can easily feel "trapped" or "smothered". So what do you do?

An only child, such as myself, is used to their own company and often happy in it. For others with siblings, they may be less intense, and not value privacy as much.

When your partner tells you that they need space, they are not necessarily pushing you away. I say not necessarily, because let's not kid ourselves here, they may genuinely not want to be with you, but if all other areas of your relationship are ok, then it's nothing to fear.

So, if this behaviour is out of character, be careful!

The point is, people who need more space have usually always been like that. You may have lost sight of it, perhaps you're working all the time like so many people today. Just think back to how things used to be.

Having gone through all that, if you decide that this is a new form of behaviour, you may need to talk!

Now every relationship guide out there will tell you that when you split up you should abandon all communication with the other party. This is because your emotions are running high and you may end up saying the wrong thing and making things worse.

However, in an ongoing relationship, and this is something that never seems to get mentioned, a partner asking for more space is not the same as giving someone more space after a breakup.

When a partner wants more time to themselves it's often nothing to do with their partner, in that they are perfectly happy, but for a plethora of reasons they need space. It can be stress at work, tiredness, or that general malaise we can all feel from time to time from the stresses of modern living. They just need time out from everything.

The most important thing in a relationship is communication.

Without quality time spent alone with one's partner, relationships can be hard work.

To maintain mutual understanding, aim to have a date together once a week, in which there are no friends or TV, just the two of you, talking.

By rediscovering each other, you will feel comfortable together, even when your partner needs more space!

The Importance Of A Mentor, Coach Or Trainer

This past weekend I was painfully reminded of how important regular coaching is. I have been involved in a specific sport for years and had always had access to regular weekly coaching. Last year I moved into an area where coaches are not as accessible so I have not had any coaching for about six months. This past weekend we had a fairly high level coach come in for a training session and I was shocked at how much I had slipped back into my old habits in such a short period of time. I really didn't hear anything new but I was reminded of how lazy I had become while practicing this sport on my own.

You might ask what this has to do with your business. Anything you do in life or have a passion for takes a lot of work and consistency. Consistency means nothing though if you're consistently doing the wrong things. Have you ever heard the saying that it not "Practice that makes Perfect" but "Perfect Practice that makes Perfect". Having regular coaching or belonging to a group of Experts or Masterminds can bring many benefits to both your business and your personal endeavors.

When people work on their own they naturally tend to become complacent. It's easier to work on the things that come easy to us and we avoid the things that are harder. A perfect example of this is in a Sales role. We all know that in sales roles customer service is a huge part. How many sales people do you know that would rather speak to people they've already developed a relationship with, helping them with their problems rather than making a dreaded cold call to someone they don't know. How about when you go to the gym? If you don't have a personal trainer are you one of those people that will work on the easy exercises? Or maybe you are the type that stops as soon as it starts to hurt. As the saying goes, no pain, no gain and this is where a coach can help. A coach can help you to push the envelope and move outside of your comfort zone where normally you might not.

Having a coach, trainer or a mentor keeps you honest with yourself. They remind you of the things you need to be doing consistently (even if they're things you don't necessarily like or want to do). They bring new and fresh ideas and they give a different perspective on things that you see and touch every day. Sometimes it's hard to see what's happening if you're too close to it.

The other benefit that a regular coach provides is they alert you to the things you may be doing correctly. Confirmation comes in many forms. Concrete proof comes through reporting, tracking and testing. Social proof and acceptance comes through things like customer testimonials and referrals. What about your ideas, concepts and strategies on new projects? A coach or expert will be able to confirm whether you're on the right track, or even moving in the right direction. This is especially important for small business owners who do a lot of work on their own. The other benefit that comes from regular coaching is that you are provided with a framework and something to strive for. It helps with the often much needed motivation especially when things aren't going as well as we may like.

Regular coaching or training also helps us to become good listeners. We practice listening because we listen most intently when we're trying to learn something that's going to benefit us directly. Regular coaching gets us into the practice of listening to others. We all know how important listening is when it comes to sales, and good customer relationships. The best sales people are the greatest listeners.

Often people "don't know" what they "don't know". We get in our own way - and when we stop learning we stop moving forward. Learning is the greatest gift we can give ourselves and our business!
